Questions riders ask before this trip

Saturna rewards travellers who read the timetable all the way through. The Swartz Bay–Lyall Harbour trip may include other island stops, vehicle space is first-come, and the shuttle at the far end deserves a real confirmation. Do that homework and the sailing is a beauty.

How early should I arrive for the Swartz Bay–Lyall Harbour ferry?

Arrive early for deck space and follow any sailing-specific priority instructions. This route is first-come and non-bookable. Swartz Bay stops checking in foot passengers ten minutes before departure and vehicles five minutes before; Lyall Harbour closes check-in five minutes before for both.

Where do I pay, and is Swartz Bay–Lyall Harbour a return fare?

Pay at the terminal. Prices change; use the current official fare guide and its effective date. BC Ferries publishes Victoria–Southern Gulf Islands as a return fare, so one fare covers the round trip. Cash, debit, major credit cards and BC Ferries Experience Cards are accepted at terminals.

Can I park at Swartz Bay or Lyall Harbour and walk on?

Swartz Bay has 716 paid spaces, split between 172 short-term and 544 long-term. For a multi-day Saturna stay, leaving the car at Swartz Bay is more predictable; never block the island's loading lanes or roadside access. Lyall Harbour offers free roadside parking instead of a large terminal lot.

Can I take a bicycle to Saturna Island?

Yes, bring the bike. Bikes are free with the passenger fare. Saturna is a real ride, not a roll off the ramp: carry water, lights and a repair kit for the island leg. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes early, identify the bike at check-in, walk it aboard when directed and secure it on the vehicle deck.

Can I reserve the Saturna ferry?

No. Lyall Harbour vehicles board in arrival order, regardless of any reservation you hold for another route. Check conditions and join the Southern Gulf Islands queue. If a flight, event or onward ferry matters, leave room for the following departure.

Does Saturna get priority on some Swartz Bay sailings?

Yes. The applicable time changes by schedule season, so check the current Swartz Bay terminal notice instead of memorizing one clock time. BC Ferries currently flags select weekday afternoon departures for Saturna priority and asks Saturna-bound customers to arrive at least 15 minutes before departure.

How do I get around Saturna without a car?

The Saturna Lions Shuttle serves Lyall Harbour, but don't expect city-bus frequency. Confirm the current pickup arrangement before sailing. For a late or shoulder-season arrival, line up the accommodation ride in advance too.

Will my sailing stop at other islands before Saturna?

It may. Open the exact sailing in the current schedule and read its stop list; don't infer the itinerary from the destination label alone. Southern Gulf Islands schedules can include intermediate stops and different island sequences, so elapsed time varies even between departures on the same day.
