Commuter guide

Questions riders ask before this trip

Long Harbour–Sturdies Bay is a small-island day, not a turn-up-and-improvise shuttle. Cars load in arrival order, both parking arrangements are modest, and the boat may visit another island first. Check the stops and settle the ride at each end before you leave.

How early should I arrive for Long Harbour–Sturdies Bay?

Give yourself real margin when a full vehicle deck would spoil the day. This inter-island trip is non-bookable and vehicles load by arrival order. Long Harbour and Sturdies Bay both close check-in five minutes before departure for foot passengers and vehicles.

Is Long Harbour–Sturdies Bay a one-way fare, and where do I pay?

Pay at the terminal and use the current fare guide rather than a saved price. BC Ferries lists Southern Gulf Islands inter-island travel as a one-way fare, so budget separately for the trip back. Terminals accept cash, debit, major credit cards and BC Ferries Experience Cards.

Can I park at Long Harbour or Sturdies Bay and walk on?

Long Harbour has 12 free terminal spaces with a 20-minute limit, plus limited free overnight roadside parking outside the terminal. Sturdies Bay lists limited free roadside parking. Neither end is a dependable large lot, so keep loading approaches clear and arrive with a fallback.

Can I take a bicycle between Salt Spring and Galiano?

Yes. Bikes travel free with the passenger fare. Bring lights, water and repair basics for the island roads beyond the ramps. BC Ferries asks cyclists to arrive 30 to 60 minutes early, identify the bicycle at check-in, walk aboard when directed and secure it on the vehicle deck.

Can I reserve the Long Harbour–Galiano ferry?

No. A Tsawwassen booking does not carry onto this inter-island leg; cars board in arrival order. Recheck the schedule near travel day and keep the following sailing workable when lodging, dinner or another ferry depends on your arrival.

Does the ferry run directly from Salt Spring to Galiano?

Not every departure does. Southern Gulf Islands sailings use changing stop sequences, and you normally remain aboard through intermediate calls unless the itinerary or crew says otherwise. Open your exact sailing and read its stops and elapsed time before planning a tight pickup.

Can I continue without a car at either end?

Long Harbour lists BC Transit, while Sturdies Bay lists the Galiano Community Bus. Island service is not city-frequency transit, so check operating days and times and confirm any accommodation pickup before boarding. A bicycle is the more flexible fallback if the route suits you.

What accessibility help and amenities are at Sturdies Bay?

Sturdies Bay lists wheelchairs and boarding assistance, plus a washroom, waiting room, Wi-Fi, bike rack, pet area, snack kiosk and picnic space. Ask for help before the cutoff. Long Harbour also lists an accessible washroom, wheelchairs and boarding assistance.
