Questions riders ask before this trip
Hornby is the second ferry in a two-boat trip from Vancouver Island. Loading is first come, schedules can switch to shuttle service, and the useful weekday priority pass starts on Hornby, not in the Denman line.
How early should I arrive for Denman East–Hornby Island?
Gravelly Bay and Shingle Spit both load first come, first served. Check-in and ticket sales close three minutes before departure, but arrive much earlier in summer. A sailing can fill, and shuttle mode may replace the printed times with continuous crossings.

Pay on the charged leg and that fare covers the return. Ticket agents accept debit, major credit cards, mobile wallets, cash and the Experience Card. Use the current guide for the price because an old island tip can age quickly.

Only with care. Denman East has five free spaces, while Shingle Spit has no parking. Both accept foot passengers, but a ride, bike or drop-off is far safer than showing up by car and hoping. Read every posted limit before leaving a vehicle.

Yes. Pay the passenger fare and the bike rides free. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes early, check in as directed, walk through the vehicle deck, and secure the bike where the crew indicates. Denman East has a rack, but bring a lock and charge an e-bike beforehand.

No. Both directions load by arrival order, and buying a ticket doesn't hold deck space. Leave room to miss one ferry on a busy day, and more if you also need the Buckley Bay boat. Check live conditions rather than a timetable screenshot.

Sail from Shingle Spit to Denman East, then drive about 15 minutes across the island to Denman West for the Baynes Sound Connector. There is no public transit at Denman East, so walk-ons need a ride arranged. These are separate queues, not a protected connection.

On Monday through Friday, the first 15 vehicles at Shingle Spit for the 7:30 am sailing get a priority pass for the 8:00 am Denman West departure to Buckley Bay. It only helps that morning connection. It isn't a general reservation or a pass for traffic heading toward Hornby.

At peak times, BC Ferries may stop following the listed times and run continuously instead. Shuttle mode can move the line faster, but it doesn't reserve your spot on the next deck. Check the live page and follow terminal staff rather than timing a tight arrival from a static schedule.
