Questions riders ask before this trip

This is the clever link between Alert Bay and Sointula, when the timetable lines up. It saves a return to Vancouver Island, but it is not a frequent shuttle. Pick the trip home before you go and the shortcut is a treat.

How early should I arrive for Alert Bay–Sointula?

Protect the sailing you need and arrive 20 to 30 minutes early. Alert Bay–Sointula can have far fewer useful departures than the Port McNeill legs, and both island terminals stop checking in foot passengers and vehicles five minutes before departure.

How do I pay for the Alert Bay–Sointula ferry?

The current fare guide treats Port McNeill–Alert Bay–Sointula as one return-fare route. Because this is an inter-island leg inside the loop, use the current calculator for your exact trip rather than guessing where or how much is collected. BC Ferries lists cash, debit, major credit cards and the Experience Card at terminals.

Can I park at Alert Bay or Sointula and walk on?

No terminal parking is listed at either island end. Arrange a lift, walk from your accommodation or bring a bike, and settle the far-end pickup before sailing. Neither terminal has public transit to rescue a vague plan, and the roadside beside the ramp isn't an unofficial parking lot.

Can I bring a bicycle between Alert Bay and Sointula?

Yes, bring the bike. The bicycle rides free with your passenger fare and solves much of the no-transit problem on either island. Charge an e-bike ashore; BC Ferries doesn't allow charging on the vessel. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes early, check in, walk aboard and secure it where crew direct.

Can I reserve a vehicle between Alert Bay and Sointula?

No. Join the line for the right island because cars load by arrival order. Check conditions and leave a real margin; this is a short hop with a potentially long wait for the next useful boat. Arriving early won't help if you're queued for the wrong destination.

Can I visit Alert Bay and Sointula in one day?

Sometimes, but the timetable must prove it. Check the exact date, the return path and the final sailing before treating both islands as one easy day trip. The inter-island connection can avoid backtracking through Port McNeill, yet service between the two islands doesn't run like a frequent shuttle.

Do the island terminals have public transit?

No. Build the day around walking, a bicycle or a confirmed ride rather than expecting a bus when the ramp drops. BC Ferries lists no public transportation at either Alert Bay or Sointula. Both are walkable at the terminal edge, but the places you want may not be.

Is the Island Aurora accessible?

The vessel guide lists accessible washrooms, a stair lift and an accessible passenger lounge, plus outer-deck and heated-solarium spaces. Contact BC Ferries before travel if you need boarding help. Alert Bay and Sointula each list an accessible washroom at or beside the terminal.
