Commuter guide

Questions riders ask before this trip

Larkspur is the Marin commute that can make Highway 101 feel optional. Give the terminal 20 minutes, sort your parking or SMART connection before leaving home, and keep the bay crossing as the easy part of the morning.

How early should I arrive for the Larkspur ferry?

Arrive 20 minutes early if you need a ticket or aren't using Clipper. The gate shuts one minute before departure, and the overflow lot adds a walk. That last minute belongs to the boat, not to you.

How do I pay for the Larkspur–San Francisco ferry?

Pay with Clipper, an accepted contactless card or mobile wallet, or a paper ticket. Every rider needs a separate payment method. Tap when boarding and don't tap off at the other end.

Is parking available at Larkspur Ferry Terminal?

Yes. The main and overflow lots are first come, first served. Parking is currently paid on weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., then free in the afternoon and on weekends. Overnight parking isn't allowed, so check the current fee and move the car by day's end.

Can I bring a bicycle or e-bike on the ferry?

Yes, if the bike space hasn't filled. Walk your bike through the terminal and aboard. Keep e-bikes and electric scooters switched off, and don't count on charging during the crossing.

Can I connect between the ferry and the SMART train?

Yes. Allow about 15 minutes to walk between SMART's Larkspur Station and the ferry terminal. Check both timetables before leaving. Clipper transfer rules can change, so confirm the current rules before budgeting for a credit.

Is the Larkspur ferry accessible?

Yes. Arrive at least 20 minutes early and ask a terminal employee for pre-boarding before the general line moves. You don't have to explain your disability. Just tell staff what help you need.

Where does the ferry board in San Francisco?

Board behind the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street. Larkspur departures currently use Gate B, but read the departure board when you arrive. A gate change is easier to handle before the line forms.

What can I see during the Larkspur crossing?

Look for the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, Angel Island, and Mount Tamalpais on a clear day. Fog may hide half the list. It still beats studying brake lights on 101.
