Commuter guide

Questions riders ask before this trip

Oakland to San Francisco is one of the Bay's best short rides. The only real trick is that some boats also call at Main Street Alameda, which changes the timing and stop order. Read your exact trip before joining the line.

How early should I arrive for the Oakland ferry?

Be there at least five minutes early. Ten to 15 is better during the commute, on a busy weekend, or when you need garage validation. Regular boats load first come, first served.

How do I pay for the Oakland–San Francisco ferry?

Pay with Clipper, the San Francisco Bay Ferry mobile option, or an eligible paper ticket. Have it ready before boarding. Regular service doesn't take reservations, so your valid fare and place in line are the whole game.

Where should I park for the Oakland ferry?

Use the garage at 101 Washington Street near Jack London Square. Validate at the ferry dock, and read the current garage terms before walking away. Skipping that quick validation can turn into an expensive commute.

Can I bring a bicycle or e-bike on the Oakland ferry?

Yes, while designated storage has room. Bikes and scooters board first come, first served. Secure yours where the crew asks, and check the current battery rules before bringing an e-bike.

How long does the Oakland ferry take?

Allow roughly 15 to 25 minutes on the boat. Direction and a Main Street Alameda stop can change the total. Check your individual trip instead of planning around the shortest number.

Which gate does the Oakland ferry use in San Francisco?

Normal service currently uses Gate G1, with exceptions printed in the timetable. Check the live departure before walking down the pier. Yesterday's gate is useful context, not a promise.
