Questions riders ask before this trip
The Staten Island Ferry is one of the city's great free rides. It runs all night and takes about 25 minutes. Check the gap to the next boat, then get upstairs and enjoy the harbour.
How early should I arrive for the Staten Island Ferry?
Arrive with enough time to enter the terminal and join the boarding queue. There is no reservation or ticket line, but the boat still leaves on schedule. Check the live times, especially overnight and off-peak when missing one can mean a longer wait.

It's free. There is no ticket, pass, or reservation to buy. Walk into the terminal, follow the boarding signs, and ignore anyone offering to sell you access to this boat.

Don't drive to Whitehall expecting a ferry lot; the terminal is set up for subway, bus, walking, and drop-offs. St. George has paid parking nearby. Read the posted rate and time restrictions before leaving a car all day or overnight.

Yes, and the bike is free too. Walk it through the terminal, use the lower-level boarding area, and leave it in the designated storage spot. Pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed. Electric mopeds aren't.

The ride takes about 25 minutes. The wait can be longer because departure gaps change through the day. Check the live schedule before you leave, especially late at night.

Yes, every night of the year. Boats are less frequent overnight than during the weekday rush, so check the schedule. Missing one at 2 a.m. is a very different mistake from missing one at 5 p.m.

Look for Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the working waterfront. An open outdoor deck is the move when the weather cooperates. Bring a layer because the harbour wind is real.
