Questions riders ask before this trip

Lopez is the gentlest island to cycle and one of the easiest places to misunderstand the reservation rules. Coming back from Lopez, there is no reservation to make, only a sailing quota and the wisdom to arrive early. Reserve a vehicle westbound from Anacortes.

How early should I arrive for the Anacortes–Lopez ferry?

With a vehicle reservation from Anacortes, WSF advises arriving 45 to 60 minutes early. Walk-ons and bikes should still arrive about 20 minutes early. Returning from Lopez is first come, first served, so give yourself a larger buffer when traffic is heavy.

Where do I pay for the Anacortes–Lopez ferry?

Fares are collected at Anacortes for the westbound trip. A reservation doesn't include the fare, so keep the booking and ticket concepts separate. No fare is collected for the eastbound return from Lopez to Anacortes.

Is there parking at the Lopez Island ferry terminal?

Yes, but it's limited and WSF caps terminal parking at 72 hours. If you walk on, arrange the island-side ride before the ferry arrives. The village is about four miles from the landing, so parking at the dock doesn't put you in town.

Can I bring a bicycle to Lopez Island?

Yes. Lopez is bike-friendly, but the village isn't at the dock, so save some legs for after unloading. Bicycles may bypass the vehicle line, and WSF asks riders to arrive about 20 minutes early. The terminal has one rack for eight bikes.

Can I reserve a vehicle from Lopez back to Anacortes?

No. WSF assigns vehicle quotas to individual sailings, so the useful plan is an early arrival, not a hunt for a reservation that doesn't exist. Vehicle reservations are available from Anacortes to Lopez, but departures from Lopez to Anacortes are first come, first served.

How long is the Anacortes–Lopez crossing?

The time changes by sailing because some trips are direct and others make island stops. The route map is simple; the day's stopping pattern may not be. Use the arrival time on the specific WSF schedule rather than assuming every Lopez boat takes the same path.

Can I take the ferry from Lopez to another San Juan Island?

Yes, but westbound inter-island travel from Lopez requires a ticket for destinations such as Shaw, Orcas, or Friday Harbor. Read the exact sailing because some trips restrict inter-island vehicles while still carrying walk-ons and bicycles. Vehicle reservations aren't offered for inter-island trips.

What facilities are available while I wait at Lopez?

Bring water and a snack to the Lopez dock. It has a waiting room and portable toilets, but WSF lists no food service, running water, or permanent restroom. That matters when you are cycling or the next boat is not soon.
