Questions riders ask before this trip
Friday Harbor–Shaw trades a town waterfront for one of WSF's smallest island landings. The best trip is built backward from the boat home, with transport and supplies settled first. Shaw is quiet, lightly served, and short on backup options.
How early should I arrive for the Friday Harbor–Shaw ferry?
With a car, arrive early at Friday Harbor or Shaw and treat the sailing as first come, first served. Walk-ons need time to reach loading; bicycles and motorcycles should be there for WSF's 20-minute early-loading window. WSF says terminal conditions are unavailable at Shaw, so a quiet-looking status page still does not guarantee boarding.

Shaw to Friday Harbor is westbound, so vehicles and motorcycles need an inter-island ticket at Shaw under the vehicle fare table in WAC 468-300-020. Walk-on passengers and ordinary bicycles travel no-charge both ways; buy the westbound vehicle ticket online or at Shaw. Friday Harbor to Shaw is eastbound and no vehicle fare is collected.

Friday Harbor has no terminal parking and only limited short-term street space. Read the posted signs and arrange another option before counting on either dock. Shaw has limited terminal parking with a strict 12-hour limit. That can suit a short outing, not an overnight.

Yes, and the inter-island trip is no charge. A bike is often more useful than walking here, but bring repair basics and a return plan. Bypass the car queue, arrive 20 minutes early, and walk the bicycle aboard and ashore. Shaw has one rack for eight bikes.

No. At the terminal, use the inter-island lane and follow staff directions for that sailing. Inter-island vehicle trips are first come, first served, even when one endpoint also handles reserved Anacortes traffic. An advance ticket only handles a westbound fare.

No. Check the note beside your exact departure rather than assuming every boat at Shaw can take your car. The WSF timetable marks selected calls “No interisland vehicles. Foot passenger and bikes okay.” It also uses direction-loading symbols that can make a stop look counterintuitive.

WSF lists a waiting room and restrooms, but Shaw remains a small, ground-level landing with no overhead passenger loading or terminal elevator. Bring anything you need beyond the wait itself. Island terminals load walk-ons through the car deck; vessels have elevators between decks.

Only if the day is planned around the timetable. Choose the return first, allow a backup sailing, and keep your walking radius realistic. Shaw is quiet and the terminal isn't a transport hub, while some returns run only on certain days or through the T-pattern circuit.
