Questions riders ask before this trip

Lopez–Orcas links two islands with very different ground travel. Solve those last miles before enjoying the free walk-on crossing. Lopez's dock sits four miles from its village; Orcas Village isn't Eastsound, and the road beyond climbs.

How early should I arrive for the Lopez–Orcas ferry?

If you are driving, arrive early and read the Lopez and Orcas terminal pages before joining the correct inter-island lane. Walk-ons need boarding time; bicycles and motorcycles should use WSF's 20-minute early-loading window. There are no vehicle reservations for this hop, and first-come deck space still does not guarantee boarding.

Do I pay going from Lopez to Orcas or Orcas to Lopez?

Lopez to Orcas is westbound, so vehicles and motorcycles pay at Lopez. One inter-island vehicle ticket works between any two islands; it's not destination-specific. Orcas to Lopez is eastbound and no vehicle fare is collected. Walk-on passengers and ordinary bicycles are no charge in both directions.

What are the parking limits at Lopez and Orcas terminals?

Lopez offers limited terminal parking for up to 72 hours. Capacity isn't a promise; obey the signs you find. Orcas lists 36 spaces plus 16 angled spaces near the upper tollbooth, but no terminal parking on summer weekends and none on the county road.

Is Lopez–Orcas a good bicycle connection?

The ferry part is excellent: bicycles ride no-charge inter-island, bypass car traffic, and should arrive 20 minutes early. Lopez riding is comparatively gentle, while Orcas asks more of your legs, plan the island miles honestly. Lopez has one eight-bike rack; Orcas has space for 16.

Can I reserve a car between Lopez and Orcas?

No. Buying the Lopez westbound fare online can save a transaction, but it doesn't hold space on a particular boat. Inter-island vehicles are first come, first served. Reservations are for eligible Anacortes–island vehicle trips, not island-to-island travel.

Why might a listed Lopez or Orcas sailing refuse my car?

Some mainline island stops are passenger-and-bicycle calls only for inter-island travel. Direction-loading symbols and day-of-week notes matter too, so read the individual row instead of scanning only the two terminal times. WSF prints a specific “No interisland vehicles” symbol beside them.

How far are the island villages from the ferry docks?

WSF puts Lopez Village four miles from the Lopez terminal. Confirm a shuttle, taxi, rental, pickup, or bike route in advance. On Orcas, the ferry lands at Orcas Village, not Eastsound. Neither arrival should be treated as a town-centre drop-off for your whole visit.

Is Lopez–Orcas always a direct ferry ride?

No. The shortest line on a map isn't the published route. The schedule includes an inter-island T pattern, Friday Harbor, Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, then back through the islands, and other multi-stop movements. Read the sequence for your departure and allow for intermediate calls.
