Questions riders ask before this trip

Southworth–Vashon can be a quick hop, but the three-terminal timetable sometimes sends the boat the long way. Read your sailing note, pay at Southworth, and remember that an online ticket never reserves car-deck space.

How early should I arrive for the Southworth–Vashon ferry?

There is no fixed vehicle check-in window because this route doesn't take reservations. Walk-ons and bicycles should be at the terminal about 20 minutes early. Check Southworth's live terminal status before leaving, then allow time to join the road queue and clear the tollbooth.

Where do I pay for the Southworth–Vashon ferry?

Pay at Southworth for the round trip to Vashon. Buying ahead can make the booth quicker, but the ticket pays the fare; it doesn't save a vehicle place. WSF doesn't collect passenger, bicycle, or vehicle fares when you leave Vashon for Southworth.

Can I park at Southworth or Vashon and walk on?

Southworth has a paid lot beside the terminal with about 215 spaces. Neither side rewards a last-minute parking hunt, so leave a backup plan for a full lot. At Vashon, WSF points riders to limited parking about a block uphill and park-and-ride lots farther into town.

Can I take a bicycle between Southworth and Vashon?

Yes. Southworth has one rack for eight bikes; Vashon's rack holds roughly six to eight. Bikes may bypass the vehicle queue, but Vashon-bound riders at Southworth must stop at the vehicle tollbooth to pay. Arrive about 20 minutes early and follow crew directions.

Can I reserve a vehicle on Southworth–Vashon?

No. A prepaid Southworth ticket can shorten payment, but it can't hold room on the car deck. Vehicle space on the triangle route is first come, first served. WSF reservations are limited to Port Townsend–Coupeville and the Anacortes–San Juan routes.

Does every Southworth–Vashon sailing go directly across?

No. Read the note and arrival time attached to your exact sailing before choosing it. The schedule can mix short direct trips with sailings marked via Fauntleroy, which take much longer. Some departures also carry foot passengers only from Southworth.

Do extreme low tides affect low-clearance trucks to Vashon?

They can. Ordinary passenger cars aren't named; ask WSF about a modified, unusually low, or long-overhang vehicle. WSF's published rule says trucks with less than 14 inches of ground clearance may be unable to load on trips to or from Vashon during extreme low tides.

Can I make this trip without a car?

Yes. Match the bus to the ferry you actually plan to board and check the final island connection before setting out; the dock isn't Vashon town center. Kitsap Transit serves Southworth, and King County Metro serves the Vashon terminal.
