Commuter guide

Questions riders ask before this trip

Southworth–Fauntleroy looks like a simple cross-sound run. Read the individual sailing, not just the destination board. The triangle schedule makes it less automatic: some boats run direct, others work around Vashon, and the fare rules change with direction and whether you bring a vehicle.

How early should I arrive for the Southworth–Fauntleroy ferry?

There is no reservation check-in because vehicles load first come, first served. Walk-ons and bicycles should arrive about 20 minutes before departure. Check the live terminal status and leave enough time for the approach queue, especially at commute peaks and on busy weekends.

Do I pay in both directions on Southworth–Fauntleroy?

It depends how you travel. Read the current table for your exact party. Fauntleroy collects passenger, bicycle, and vehicle-with-driver fares. Southworth collects the vehicle-and-driver fare for the trip to Fauntleroy, but walk-on passengers and bicycles don't pay in that direction.

Where can I park for the Southworth–Fauntleroy ferry?

Southworth has a paid lot beside the terminal with about 215 spaces. For a park-and-walk trip, Southworth is the side with a purpose-built option; still allow time in case it's busy. Fauntleroy has only limited on-street parking, and nearby permit-only spaces aren't ferry parking.

Can I bring a bicycle between Southworth and Fauntleroy?

Yes. Follow terminal signs and crew instructions instead of weaving through the vehicle queue. Bikes may bypass the vehicle line and should arrive about 20 minutes early. Traveling Southworth to Fauntleroy, bicycles bypass the tollbooth because no bicycle fare is collected in that direction.

Can I reserve a car space on Southworth–Fauntleroy?

No. The useful live information is the terminal queue and service alert, not a reservation search. This is a first-come, first-served vehicle route. WSF lets you buy a ticket before arrival, but explicitly says advance purchase still does not guarantee vessel space.

Is every Southworth–Fauntleroy sailing direct?

No. Check the note and arrival time for the individual departure; the triangle changes the answer by sailing. The schedule identifies some trips as direct, with no Vashon stop and a roughly 30-minute crossing. Other sailings have different stopping patterns or vehicle restrictions.

Where does the Southworth vehicle line form?

Vehicles normally queue along SE Southworth Drive toward the terminal. Don't cut through the intersection to join a shorter-looking branch. WSF says that if the line reaches the Sedgwick Road intersection, all ferry traffic must line up on SE Sedgwick Road.

Can I commute across without a car?

Yes. Check the connection on both shores, especially for the final trip of the day. Kitsap Transit serves Southworth and King County Metro serves Fauntleroy. Walking on avoids the uncertain car-deck queue, but the ferry and bus timetables are separate systems.
